Justice and Peace Group

The National Justice and Peace Network (NJPN), whose aims and efforts are accepted by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, exists to encourage work for Justice and Peace by promoting liaison and communication among diocesan groups. A network of diocesan members, fieldworkers and agency representatives is maintained through regular communications, quarterly gatherings and the organisation of a national annual conference.

The Justice and Peace Group in the Parish is relatively new having been meeting on a regular basis since September 2006. The group is chaired by Fr David and has a small core of members who meet about every six weeks. Each member has one or two particular themes which they oversee. The group aims to raise the awareness of our Parish community and encourage action on social and moral issues at local, national and international level.

New members are welcome to come along and find out more about our work. For more information please contact the Parish office.

More information on Justice and Peace issues and contacts can be obtained from:- National Justice and Peace Network www.justice-and-peace.org.uk

CAFOD

Fairtrade
Members of the J&P group run the Fairtrade stall once a month after all Masses in the church. This usually takes place on the first weekend of each month. This is a simple practical way to help really poor people to earn their way out of poverty and dependence on charity through trade. They are paid fair prices for their produce and can thus provide food, healthcare and education for their families. The goods are high quality and fairly priced. The kinds of things you would buy anyway, - tea, coffee, sugar, rice, cereal etc. so why not buy your needs from the Fairtrade stall and do everyone some good. Arms Trade
The Arms Trade is an obstacle to peace in our world. The Arms Trade exists to provide weapons to those who can pay for them. These weapons are used in countries at war. Wasting money on arms prevents it being spent on health, education, clean water and other public services. There is an increasing understanding that arms do not lead to security. To create the climate where an end to the Arms Trade is possible, there must be widespread recognition that military spending reflects vested interests rather than security requirements, that arms exports are subsidised and thus an economic drain, and that greater numbers of jobs and safer jobs would be created by investing in more useful and productive industries.

Twinning with the Holy Family Parish in Ramallah
Ramallah is a Palestinian City in the West Bank, north of Jerusalem and is part of the area enclosed by the concrete ‘Wall’ built by the Israelis. All Souls parish is twinned with the Holy Family parish in Ramallah and we aim to develop links between the two parishes to support the Palestinian people especially the Christian community. There have been visits to Ramallah as part of Pilgrimages to the Holy Land and a student at Berzeit University has visited the parish. To show our solidarity with the community and pray regularly for peace in Palestine a prayer card has been produced with a prayer in English and Arabic.

Fragile Earth

Migration and Human Trafficking
Peterborough is a City which has many migrants from many different countries. The parish is working towards becoming a more welcoming and inclusive community. People have come here for various reasons – they may be looking for work, want to be near family or to avoid war. Although they often choose to come voluntarily there are those who are involuntary migrants. Human trafficking is a modern day form of slavery. Those trafficked are from countries including Eastern Europe, the Baltic States or the Far East and they work in industries such as agriculture, construction, food processing, health, domestic service and the sex industry.

Poverty and Homelessness

The meetings take place at 4pm on a Sunday in the Presbytery. The dates arranged for 2008 are:-
